YouTuber Nick Shirley Details Close Call with Cuban Authorities While Filming Island’s Deepening Crisis

HAVANA — Independent journalist and YouTuber Nick Shirley narrowly avoided detention by Cuban authorities after arriving on the island to document its worst crisis in decades, he revealed in a new account shared Monday.

The 23-year-old arrived in Cuba on May 4 with a valid visa for journalistic activity. However, he did not have the government-assigned guide typically required for foreign reporters. Cuban customs officials seized his cameras upon entry, and agents subsequently tailed him as he documented widespread blackouts, severe shortages, and the daily struggles of residents.

That same night, members of Shirley’s security team spotted what they believed were government spies surveilling their hotel, sparking immediate concerns of potential hostage-taking or imprisonment. No arrest was made, and Shirley was able to leave the country safely.

In a detailed recounting of the events, Shirley described the tense atmosphere and the restrictions that foreign journalists face when attempting to report independently on the island. He plans to release full footage from the trip in the coming days.

Cuba has long maintained strict controls on unguided foreign reporting, often requiring official minders to accompany journalists. Independent coverage of the country’s economic and humanitarian challenges has frequently drawn scrutiny from authorities.

The incident comes as the United Nations has warned of growing humanitarian risks on the island, citing the impact of U.S. oil-related sanctions and cuts in supplies from Venezuela, which have exacerbated fuel shortages, power outages, and food insecurity.

Shirley, known for his on-the-ground reporting style, has built a following by covering global hotspots and underreported stories. His latest experience underscores the challenges faced by independent media operating in tightly controlled environments.

Further details are expected once Shirley publishes his complete video account.
