A man broke his way into a Chicago Police Department facility on Monday and pointed a gun at a police officer.
This happened during a police training exercise and the cops weren’t actually sure if the man was a part of the training or not.
They soon realize he was not part of the training, so a police officer shot the intruder in the face.
WGN reported, “Members of the CPD’s SWAT team were conducting a training exercise at the department’s Homan Square facility Monday morning. As part of the training, officers were asked to put their guns on a table in a room on the building’s fifth floor, sources said.”
“A civilian who was at Homan Square to pick up some personal property then climbed up the fire escape on the west side of the building until he reached the SWAT training area, police sources said. He re-entered the building and grabbed at least two guns off the table”
“A SWAT officer confronted the man and told him to drop the guns, sources said. When the man refused, the SWAT officer shot him in the face,” WGN reported.
Only one officer was injured and they were taken to a nearby hospital, but the authorities said the cop was not shot.

An officer was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center but did not suffer a gunshot wound, the fire department said. The nature of the officer’s injuries wasn’t immediately known.
After the shooting, officers cordoned off streets and directed traffic around the Homan Square facility, a former Sears, Roebuck & Co. warehouse.
A police spokeswoman urged members of the media not to photograph officers around the facility because they may be working undercover or doing other sensitive work.
The Homan Square compound houses the police department’s Evidence and Recovered Property Section and also serves as a hub for undercover operations and the counterterrorism bureau.
Police Supt. David Brown said, “We believe that this offender then sees this pretty open training area where there are guns on a table that’s being utilized in the training at various points.”
Chicago’s crime has skyrocketed over the last few years, especially under Lightfoot’s administration.
Lightfoot recently said in August that the city is actually making headway in addressing violence, but the data shows the city increasing in violent crimes.
Homicides went through the roof in Chicago in 2020, which followed a drop in violence for three years. Chicago recorded 770 homicides in 2020, up 50% compared to 2019.
Last year, they broke a 25-year record when it surpassed 800 homicides.
